Mash: 100% malted barley
Proof: 100
Age: 4 Years
Nose: banana cream puff, caramelized sweetness, hazelnut, honeydew melon, light floral element
Palate: Nose carries over to the palate beautifully before layering in toasted oak and some Christmas like ginger spice
Finish: sweet caramelized banana and Christmas spices linger on the palate for a medium to long finish
Rating: Hoard it (Out of Hoard, Buy, Try, Pass)
Thoughts: This has to be the youngest whiskey that's ever garnished itself a hoard it rating. It is just so damn good. Maybe it could use to be a little bit more complex, but given that this is not cask strength, the flavors and finish accomplished for bottled in bond is insane. There is a reason this whiskey absolutely crushed it at the London Spirits Competition. If you see this, just buy it. For the price? Buy two. If every American Single Malt tasted like this, a lot more people would be on board. I can't wait to watch Root Shoot continue to grow and evolve.
What's the deal?: Root Shoot is not just a whiskey brand. The Olander family farm is a generational farm that has slowly evolved over time. They have provided grains for Colorado distilleries and breweries for so long, that they decided to cut out a step and start their own malting house (Root Shoot Malting). From there, it only evolved further and they decided they should start making their own whiskey. They use the equipment from other distilleries, but their own mashbills and grains. This particular bottling? It was distilled at Vapor distillery, also known as Boulder Spirits in Boulder Colorado.
