Thoughts: what an earthy, dusty, beautiful pour. There is no reason that this should taste the way it does and only be 6.5 years old. It immediately presents itself like it is a vintage whiskey. It's no secret that I love a more earthy whiskey, and this leans into that heavily. It's really quite amazing what Taconic has been able to pull off with their bourbons. I'm in love with our pick, I think it really excels at everything it sets out to do. But at the same time, I haven't had a bad Taconic bourbon that's 5.5yrs+. This has really shown to be a beautiful time to be a fan of Taconic. If this isn't on your shelf, what are you even doing. You'd be hard pressed to find a better whiskey at this price point.
What's the Deal?: This taste like a much older whiskey than you would expect. It's possible that it could be from one of their connexes that they have on site for aging barrels that receives wild temperature swings. Or, it could just be from their normal rickhouse, painted black to help absorb more heat with large rolling doors to allow for airing out. This is the oldest single barrel bourbon released by Taconic to date, and it is just stellar. I've been telling people for a long time that they need to pay attention to Taconic, and we're at a point now where you are just straight up missing out if you're not buying their whiskey.
