Age: 4 years (blend of 4-8)
Nose: rich and dessert like, buttercream frosting and butterscotch, it's joined by a hint of raw wheat grain, hibiscus and herbal tea, the back of the nose is stone fruit forward, with poached plum and apricot dominating as it opens up
Palate: the palate sees quite a change up, it is still very dessert forward with rich butterscotch, but this time it is joined by an almost farmy ground corn and a eucalyptus herbal note with leather and cinnamon, the mid to back palate sees a birch bark, salted caramel taffy, and a fermented grape like note
Finish: a beautifully long finish with that birch bark note and a hint of peppery spice

Thoughts: This is a fascinating mix of notes that shouldn't really work together, but they just do. Every piece adds a note to the song that is this bottle. Where as some of these notes may ruin other pours, here they add to the complexity and are very much so welcome. I love that they gathered straight bourbon from the original 13 states for this blend. It's a great way to honor the 250th Anniversary of the states and a great way to show how far craft distillation has come. This blend is beautifully done and a great collectors piece. Really the only thing holding it back is the price.
What's the deal?: A blend of barrels from the original 13 states, this is a one time release for the 250th Anniversary that will not be repeated and is limited to just 1,776 bottles. The other releases in the United States of Bourbon series are not earmarked as a one time release, and leads me to believe that this will not be the only time we see the crazy endeavor from Lost Lantern. My favorite part of this series, including this 1776 edition, is the level of transparency throughout. Not only do they list every distillery involved in the blend, but they go as far as listing the age, mashbill, and barrel information from each bourbon included as well.
