Taconic Straight Bourbon - Single Barrel #1641

Updated: Mar 16

Distillery single barrel

Barrel 1641

MSRP: $100

Mash: 70% corn, 25% rye, 5% malted barley

Proof: 135.1

Age: 6yr

Nose: dark leather and brandy cherries immediately greet you, this is dark and brooding, it is followed by dusty oak, plum, and an almost peppermint oil sharpness

Palate: the palate is just as dark and brooding as the nose, everything is concentrated and earthy forward, cherry cola and oak are the first notes to find you before giving way to cracked leather, plum and strawberry, a deep soil and moss somehow without being grassy, and finally a petrichor softness

Finish: nice long finish of petrichor and leather

Rating: Hoard it (Out of Hoard, Buy, Try, Pass)

Thoughts: all I envision is that beautiful man on social media with his deep voice giving a short laugh and stating "Sensational." I'm not entirely sure where Taconic goes from here. This a deep and beautiful concentration of flavor that combines both dark earthiness with a sweet fruit level that is hard to replicate. Generally, when you have something this dark and earthy, it lacks the sweeter fruit notes, and vice versa. Accomplishing this level of balance is not a simple task, and to do so at 6 years old is insane. I wish this was my single barrel pick. I would have picked this immediately. I want to blind this against all the big boy allocated releases, because honestly, I don't think they stand a chance. Exceptional.

What's the Deal?: This barrel lasted less than a week on their website. It was brought around to local farmer's markets and then was revealed to be the absolute monster it is. So when it did finally hit the website for national shipping, word had quietly started to leak out. If you somehow find a bottle of this floating around, it is a grab without thinking type of bottle. Taconic has been releasing better and better barrels, and it's starting to show. I am so excited for the future of Taconic, it's already so bright, but it can only get better (somehow). I will never not chase Taconic.
