Luxe Liquor/Bourbon Boot single barrel "Fall Equinox"

Mash: 60% corn, 20% wheat, 10% rye, 10% malted barley
Proof: 140.2
Age: 8yrs
Nose: caramel buttercream frosting, plum, barnwood, tobacco, graham cracker, honeysuckle, light citrus zest, backbone of subtle fresh wheat
Palate: the fruitier aspects build on the front of the palate, bringing in an almost black current zip, a nice leathery earthiness joins in to round things out. The longer you sit to contemplate this glass, the more you'll find
Finish: nice long finish that starts with a citrus graham cracker before turning earthier and leaving a lingering tobacco barnwood on the palate
Rating: I won't rate my pick 🥃 (Out of Hoard, Buy, Try, Pass)
Thoughts: Everything in balance. This is a powerhouse bourbon that truly shows off what Laws is capable of. It doesn't lean heavily into any one flavor profile, but instead is a beautiful mix of everything. It had the sweeter sugary aspects, mingled with fruit, slight florality, deep earthiness, and just enough grain/terroir backbone to proudly declare "this is Laws." The proof is ever present, but never dominates, and could easily be mistaken for a mid 120s pour. I have plenty from Laws, and love what they're doing, but this may just be my overall favorite bottling. It's rare to find this level of balance in a single barrel.
What's the Deal?: What a monster of a barrel. When we first went to pick this single barrel, we had tried it in late Spring/early Summer. It could have easily been bottled right then and there, it was balanced, complex, and just a great flavor profile. But ringing in at 137.8 proof, and me being the nerd that I am... I asked for two things, if it could be dumped/bottled on the Fall Equinox, and if it could rest at the top of the rickhouse over the summer until the equinox. Luckily, the team over at Laws Whiskey House is very kind and willing to put up with my nonsense. They did both things. As a result, it gained just enough proof to get up to that magical 140+ mark, and it also emboldened all of the flavor to make this just a bold and beautiful barrel. Living up even more to that equinox moniker, everything about this flavor punch is perfectly balanced. I hate to say something I picked is one of my favorite Laws releases... But damn. This is one of my favorite Laws releases.
